Vienna on a Budget: Two Days, Free Sights Before Tickets

Vienna on a budget: two days, free sights before anything you pay for

A day in Vienna, in three parts:

• Morning: Join a free walking tour that meets in the Innere Stadt near St. Stephen's Cathedral, then look up at the tiled roof of Stephansdom from Stephansplatz.
• Midday: Walk down to the State Opera, circle its arcaded facades, and eat a supermarket lunch on a bench in the Burggarten.
• Afternoon: Pass through the Heldentor into Heldenplatz, admire the museum domes on Maria-Theresien-Platz, then continue past the Volksgarten, Parliament, Rathaus and Burgtheater to finish at Schottentor.

In this episode:

• A free walking tour in Vienna has no fixed ticket price, since guides work for tips collected at the end.
• The western arc of the Ringstrasse runs from the State Opera past the Hofburg, the Parliament and the Rathaus to Schottentor.
• Crossing Heldenplatz, the parade square of the Hofburg, and its courtyards costs nothing.
• The Schonbrunn palace interior is ticketed, and fenced garden sections such as the maze and the Privy Garden charge their own admission.
• Stephansdom stands at Stephansplatz, where the shopping streets Graben and Karntner Strasse converge, and its tiled roof shows the Habsburg double-headed eagle.
